June 2026 A11y Book Club Recap | Digital Accessibility Ethics – Live Multi-Author Q&A
Watch the recap of the June 2026 Accessibility Book Club meeting, a live 60-minute multi-author Q&A discussion of Digital Accessibility Ethics: Disability Inclusion in All Things Tech, a 368-page collection of 32 chapters by 39 authors, released May 6, 2026. This session was hosted by Crystal Scott, CPWA, Founder of the Accessibility Book Club, and featured co-editors and contributing authors from across the accessibility community. ✨ Featured Authors & Topics: Lainey Feingold (Co-Editor, disability rights lawyer) introduced the book's core ethics framework, a values-driven, actionable strategy to help advocates stop reinventing the wheel and drive real change. Chancey Fleet (Co-Editor) explored public digital amenities like ATMs, kiosks, and destination elevators, and how inaccessible design strips disabled people of privacy, autonomy, and dignity. Jess Moore Matthews discussed disabled voter disenfranchisement, sharing a powerful case study about a newly naturalized citizen denied an accessible voting machine due to undertrained poll workers. Margaux Joffe covered cognitive accessibility, presenting 14 practical actions including plain language and left-aligned text to make digital content more inclusive, with plans to create a shareable handout. Sheri Byrne tackled ethical procurement, arguing that buying inaccessible tech means buying broken things and that ethical responsibility goes far beyond avoiding lawsuits. Matt May addressed accessibility professional burnout, spotlighting how practitioners often carry full responsibility for outcomes without the authority to act, making them "heat sinks" for organizational failures. Joshua Miele examined the ethics of accessibility hackathons and student capstone projects, stressing that disabled people must be involved at every planning stage and not just as end-users. An audiobook is also in the works, with Perkins Talking Book Library producing it and co-author Laura Brady managing distribution. Whether you're an accessibility professional, designer, developer, policy advocate, or ally, this discussion is packed with real-world insights and ethical frameworks you can apply today. 🔔 Subscribe for more accessibility book club sessions! 🔗 Join the club: https://www.a11ybookclub.com
