It's "a serious and irresponsible escalation." Romania, a NATO member, is raising its voice after a Russian drone crashed last night into a residential building in the city of Galați, very close to the Ukrainian border. This is not the first time Russian drone incursions have taken place in countries neighboring Ukraine since the start of the Russian offensive in February 2022. They have even become regular occurrences. But this is the first time one of these devices has struck a building, and it is also the first time there have been injuries in a NATO country. According to authorities, two people were hit and received treatment. Nearly 70 other residents were evacuated, and traffic was blocked in the area. The incident immediately sparked a wave of diplomatic reactions. From Paris to Warsaw, from Berlin to Brussels, condemnations poured in. NATO denounced Russia's "recklessness." The Polish foreign minister deemed Moscow "dangerous," while the Moldovan president stated that "Russia is a danger to everyone." Berlin, for its part, condemned the Kremlin's "irresponsible behavior," accusing it of "continuing to threaten European collective security." Kyiv sees this as further proof of the Russian threat to the entire continent. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga is calling on the European Union to adopt "strong" sanctions against Moscow. The Ukrainian navy also claims that a Russian drone targeted a Turkish cargo ship that had just left Odessa. For several days, the Kremlin has been hinting at an escalation of its attacks against Ukraine in retaliation for Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian territory. After a series of massive bombings last weekend, Moscow even advised foreign nationals in Kyiv, including diplomats, to leave the capital before further bombardments. This drone war is now spreading far beyond Ukrainian territory. Some drones, jammed or diverted, end up in neighboring countries. But for several European officials, these incidents are no longer simply accidents. "These are not isolated acts," Ursula von der Leyen stated during a visit to Vilnius. According to the President of the European Commission, Moscow is seeking to "destabilize democratic societies" in Europe. This is also a way for the Kremlin to test NATO's defense capabilities. Neighboring countries are now preparing for a threat that has become permanent. In Finland, a drone alert recently paralyzed Helsinki airport as well as part of the maritime and rail traffic. Since joining NATO in 2023, the country has been increasing its military exercises.
