"Naming It Was the Dilemma”: SOAS Academic Subir Sinha on UK Grooming Gangs & Race Relations Part 2

लंदन वार्ता: नई विश्व व्यवस्था لندن وارتا: نیا عالمی نظام Part 2/ In a candid interview on the Cineink podcast London Varta, Dr Subir Sinha, a prominent academic at SOAS University of London, addressed one of Britain’s most sensitive and painful issues — the grooming gangs scandal. Dr Sinha, in conversation with broadcaster Pervaiz Alam, examined the organised child sexual exploitation that devastated communities in towns such as Rotherham, Rochdale, and beyond, the institutional failures that allowed it to persist for years, and the serious damage it has inflicted on race relations in the UK. Dr Sinha offered a nuanced perspective on the ethnic patterns in the offending, the political dilemmas surrounding the issue, and its wider repercussions both domestically and internationally. He acknowledges, "Naming it was the dilemma". He also acknowledged that while perpetrators came from various backgrounds and some South Asian girls were victims, “a very large number of those involved were of Pakistani origin.” Many operated as family networks — brothers, cousins, and relatives — in what he described as “family-based exploitation.” Dr Sinha highlighted the central dilemma facing authorities and commentators: “Identifying the problem was a real dilemma. If you name it… the right-wing parties immediately jump on it. Associating an entire community with such a heinous crime” creates deep difficulties. This reluctance, he suggested, contributed to years of official inaction despite mounting evidence. The scandal has had “a very bad, very deep” impact on race relations that has extended internationally. Hindu nationalist channels in India, he noted, have linked the UK cases to narratives of “love jihad” in India, folding incidents into broader political messaging. Drawing on his involvement in post-riot work after the 2022 Leicester clashes, Dr Sinha offered practical observations. Generational gaps between youth and elders are significant. Social media requires better regulation to curb hate and disinformation. Most importantly, he called for regular inter-community meetings. “Community leaders often say ‘We must live together’ when speaking separately,” he observed, “but bringing both sides into the same room remains difficult.” Dr Sinha ended with a stark warning about mob violence: when crowds take to the streets “with sticks and torches… they don’t check your passport… They just look at the colour of your skin.” In such moments, no community is safe. #LondonVarta #CineinkPodcast #RaceRelationsInBritain #GroomingGangs #UKAsians #SouthAsiansInUK #LeicesterRiots #UKMuslims #UKHindus #Indians #Pakistanis #Reform #Restore #hindutva
