Takemitsu: Rain Tree Sketch II (in memoriam Olivier Messiaen) | Hansen

Apologies for the strange B-flat sound😅 — the string broke just before my performance. Nice effect, however! I hope you enjoy it :) 🌳 The Rain Tree Sketches were inspired by a poem by Japanese novelist Kenzaburō Ōe, which describes an ancient tree that collects and stores rainwater through its leaves. Even after the storm has passed, tiny droplets continue to fall💧 Takemitsu composed this work in memory of Olivier Messiaen. He was in despair and hopelessness at the time that he isolated himself to write this piece. Performed on Thursday, 7 May 2026 at the Lee Foundation Theatre, NAFA Campus 3 Singapore.
