In need of a Military General, the King decides to hire a special Grisha who holds the power of summoning darkness named Aleksander. As his desire for more power builds over the years, he meets Mary Starkov, a non-Grisha woman he immediately falls in love with, and she as well. They’re in a blissful relationship until the Shadow Summoner’s greed grows until he can’t escape it. And as he makes and puts plan into motion to generate even more power, Mary starts to question if staying at his side is moral. Luckily for him, Mary soon figures out she too has the powerful ability to summon an uncontrollable element—the Sun. Aleksander sees this as an opportunity for them to team up and pull a coup on the King. However, Mary doesn’t want to reign over the nation, she just wants to be with him. But deep down, she knows she can’t. Mary searches for a way to stop Aleksander but finds another option. She can expel her powers, in order for him to not be able to use her power for malice. Upset, Aleksander moves forward with his plans to overthrow the king. However, Mary acts quickly and tries to kill him. Unsuccessful, she’s captured by the King and executed. In a state of shock and horror, Aleksander creates the fold and launches his war, with his loyal Grishas, against the King.
