Hot Five Jazzmakers+Jeff Healey+Neville Dickie Sunny Side of

Jeff Healey left us all on Sunday March 2/08, after a long fight with cancer, at the age of 41. Words cannot express the sense of loss felt by all of those he touched with his music. Here's a 1992 clip of Jeff on cornet, his second love after guitar. He was a frequent guest with the Hot Five Jazzmakers at our Saturday matinees, where he would play his horn as long as his chops would hold out! Then he would revert to his incomparable acoustic jazz guitar and sing his jazz vocals like nobody else can. Jeff would have a go at every instrument. We have a youtube of him at "C'est what?" playing banjo beautifully, across his lap of course! His dynamic stage presence and enthusiasm were contagious to all who played with him or who were lucky enough to watch him in action. He revealed the magic of traditional classic jazz to a younger generation who would otherwise never have known of its special qualities. For us jazz veterans, this was one of his greatest achievements The Hot Five Jazzmakers line-up here is the 1992 vintage, with Janet Shaw - reeds; Brian Graville - trumpet; Rainer Hunck - guitar; Colin Bray - bass and Brian Towers -trombone/leader. Guesting on piano was England's great stride pianist Neville Dickie, on tour in Canada and the USA. Jeff, there will never be another one like you - rest in peace!
