The Red and the Black, subtitled Chronicles of the Nineteenth Century, tells the long story of the life and ambitions of Julien Sorel, a young man of humble origins who aspires to nobility and, to this end, decides to follow the path of the Church and become a priest. But he crosses paths with two women with whom he falls in love and who change his life. Isabella Santucci also discusses the life of Henry-Marie Beyle, her pseudonyms, her writings, and the writing of The Red and the Black.
