Goldmine Türkei | Der wahre Preis des Goldes
In western Turkey, a massive gold mine is planned – right in the heart of a natural paradise. While the government orders the felling of 200,000 trees, an unusual resistance is forming, comprised of farmers, environmental activists, and city dwellers. The film tells the story of the struggle for water, forest, and dignity – and of the courage of the people who are standing up to the gold rush. Production: NDR / ARTE / MDR Genre: Documentary, Environment, Politics, Society Country of Production: Germany / Turkey Language: German Running Time: approx. 30–45 minutes First Broadcast: approx. 2023 Filming Locations: Goose Mountains / Çanakkale / Aegean Region, Turkey An international consortium, supported by the Erdoğan government, is planning a gold mine in the Goose Mountains on the Turkish Aegean coast. Officially, 20,000 trees were authorized for clearing, but in reality, almost 200,000 were felled – an environmental crime of historic proportions. While proponents see the new jobs as an opportunity, others are fighting for their livelihoods: clean water, healthy soil, and sustainable agriculture. Former civil engineer Cem Gembilder and dozens of volunteers are setting up a protest camp in the forest, inspired by the Gezi Park movement. Many women are also getting involved, founding organic cooperatives and fighting for an ecological future. The film documents the growing conflict between the local population, mining companies, and the state – a microcosm of the political and environmental crisis in Turkey. "Gold Rush in Turkey – Battle for the Goose Mountains" is a compelling portrait of a movement that refuses to back down. 00:00 – The conflict begins: Gold mine vs. natural paradise In the Goose Mountains, an international consortium is planning a massive gold mine – right in the middle of a natural paradise. Nearly 200,000 trees have been felled, and villagers are protesting against environmental destruction and cyanide pools. Activist Cem describes how agriculture, water, and local identity are threatened. 8:10 AM – Resistance in the Forest: Activists, Tent Camps, and Civil Disobedience Activists are documenting clandestine logging, marking trees, illegally camping at the forest's edge, and organizing informational trips. Young people are joining them – inspired by the Gezi Park movement. The state is responding with inspections and pressure, while the protest movement grows. 3:55 PM – Mine Supporters: Jobs, Politics, and Economic Hardship Some villages welcome the mine: jobs, infrastructure, and investment convince many residents, especially AKP supporters. Village head Mehmet Sezgin supports the government's position. At the same time, opponents warn of risks: water contamination, forest destruction, and the danger of earthquakes at cyanide pools. 11:30 PM – A Nationwide Outcry: Mass Protests, Politics, and the Future of the Mountains The protests are spreading beyond the region – hundreds of thousands are demonstrating. Opposition politicians are showing solidarity, seeing a threat to the drinking water of 200,000 people and criticizing the mine's approval. The movement is becoming a symbol of resistance against the government and big business. Activists vow to stay – until the mountains are saved. ..................................................................
