Origines et héritages antiques de l'Europe, avec Violaine Sébillotte Cuchet

She is most often depicted with a white bull, the result of Zeus's metamorphosis, who uses this subterfuge to seduce and mate with her. Even though the name Europa refers to this mythology, it is difficult for us to view our own Western Europe through the prism of the ancient world. Yet, we generally consider that Antiquity has transmitted to us models that form the basis of our current conception of Europe. With a new History of Europe, historians have taken the gamble of returning to its origins. When was Europe born? What is the gap between our conception of Europe and the ancient conception? How should we approach this European history, heavily influenced by Greco-Roman civilizations, when it cannot be reduced to them? What, above all, are Europe's legacies for our contemporary society? Can we even compare our own concepts (democracy, equality, etc.) to those of Antiquity? Our guests: Violaine Sebillotte Cuchet is a specialist in Greek Antiquity. A professor at the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, she has just edited the first volume of the History of Europe collection (Passés composé, 672 pages, €42). Benjamin Deruelle is a professor of modern history at the University of Quebec in Montreal. He is also editor of the entire History of Europe collection, which will include four volumes from Antiquity to the present day. *** Facebook:   / histoireetcivilisationsmag   Instagram:   / histoireetcivilisations   Twitter:   / storiavoce
