From Classical Poetics to the Modern Hermeneutics of Suspicion
This lecture briefly summarizes the final phase of the transformation from the Classical poetics of the ancient world, recalibrated by the Augustinian ordo amoris, a hermeneutics of love and faith, to a “hermeneutics of suspicion” of the Enlightenment’s atheist rationalist humanism. Far from sweetness and light, the voluntarism of the new view of language, understood rightly by Schopenhauer, lead others to impute the self-interested motives of money (Marx), sex (Freud), and power (Nietzsche) to language, setting up the literary theories of the twentieth century for what we popularly term ‘postmodernism’.
