London Day 3 // Borough Market // Turnips // Mei Mei // fish! // The Shard // St Pancras
As our time in London came to a close, we knew we had only half a day left before we took the train to Paris. With limited time, we decided to make the most of it by visiting Borough Market, just a short walk from our accommodation. We had done our homework, and we had a list of must-try foods to sample, making sure we would experience the best of what the market had to offer. It was the perfect way to wrap up our London adventure. Upon arriving at Borough Market, we were immediately struck by the lively atmosphere. The market was buzzing with activity, filled with locals and tourists alike. The vibe was relaxed, yet there was an undeniable sense of excitement in the air as people weaved between stalls selling fresh produce, artisanal foods, and delicious street eats. The variety of food choices was overwhelming, and we were eager to dive in. We first made our way to the stall, Turnips where we had ordered a truffle wild mushroom risotto, which was being prepared fresh. While we waited, we couldn’t resist checking out the other offerings. One stall, in particular, caught our attention: it was selling warm, freshly baked pork sausage rolls. Their golden, flaky puff pastry looked irresistible, and we decided to grab one. The savory, salty taste of the pork inside the puff pastry was a perfect bite, and we savored it as we explored the market further. As we continued to browse the stalls, we were drawn to a stand selling raw seafood. The size of the fresh seafood on display was absolutely enormous. Lobsters, crabs, and oysters were on display, and while it all looked incredibly tempting, we couldn’t help but feel a little sad. We were leaving London soon and wouldn’t have the chance to cook it ourselves. It was one of those moments that made us wish we had just a bit more time in the city. Our risotto was finally ready, and it did not disappoint. The wild mushrooms were cooked to perfection, and the creamy risotto was topped with a generous amount of cheese. Every bite was rich and comforting, and the truffle added a luxurious, earthy depth to the dish. It was the kind of food that made us wish we could stay longer in London, just to have one more taste of its culinary delights. We had also planned to try ciabatta from a bakery at the market, but by the time we had eaten our risotto and sausage rolls, we were simply too full to indulge any further. However, the smell of freshly baked bread lingered in the air, and it was hard to resist the temptation. Another highlight of the visit was discovering Mei Mei, a store featured on Uncle Roger’s YouTube channel. We had heard so much about it, and it was a fun surprise to stumble upon it in the market. Unfortunately, Aunty Liz wasn’t there, so we didn’t get the chance to snap a selfie, but it was still exciting to see the shop in person. It felt like a quirky moment in our journey through London. Before we left, we made sure to queue for fish and chips. You simply can't leave London without trying this iconic dish, and we had our sights set on a shop named fish! which had won the National Fish and Chip Awards. The crispy, golden beer batter on the fish was unlike anything we’d had before—crunchy, light, and perfectly seasoned. We had eaten plenty of fries during our European trip, so we decided to skip the chips this time, but the fish alone was worth the wait. After our culinary feast, it was time to head to St. Pancras station for our train to Paris. On our way there, we passed London Bridge station and were surprised to see the towering silhouette of The Shard in front of us. We had seen this iconic building countless times while walking around London, but it was only now that we truly appreciated its grandeur. We hadn't planned on visiting it, but seeing it up close was a memorable moment that added an unexpected surprise to our journey. As we boarded the train to Paris, we couldn’t help but feel grateful for all the experiences London had given us. The food, the sights, and even the little surprises along the way had made this final day unforgettable. It was a day filled with great flavors, unforgettable moments, and a sense of satisfaction. London had been an incredible adventure, and though it was time to leave, we knew we would carry these memories with us as we traveled onward to the next chapter of our European journey.
