A WWI War Story depicted in music on 1910s piano roll
Artis Wodehouse foot-pumps a massive 1910s piano roll “A War Story” consisting of a sequence of well-known tunes that trace the experience of a WWI soldier leaving home, fighting in a ferocious battle and returning home, victorious. The arrangement also features the use of the piano to create sounds that simulated cannons and gunfire. The brilliant roll arrangement “A War Story” was created by Mae E. Brown. It was one of a series of piano rolls issued during the 1910s that were called “Movie Series” piano rolls, created for home entertainment and meant to capitalize on the popularity of silent films. In the case of “Movie Series” rolls, a visual scenario was suggested through a musical "chapters" of familiar and pictorial music. The different musical "chapters" are as follows: 0:00 Reveille 0:28 Marching Thro’ Georgia 1:06 Soldiers’ Farewell 1:43 Good Night Ladies 2:01 The Girl I Left Behind Me 2:16 Tenting Tonight 4:53 Off to Battle 6:12.The Battle, Under the Tents 8:03 A Storm or Cannonading 8:57 When Johnny Comes Marching Home 9:47 Yankee Doodle and Star Spangled Banner For more information about Mae Brown, go to Bill Edwards ragtime page at: http://ragpiano.com/comps/mebrown.shtml Wodehouse's 1912 player piano was built by Bush & Lane of Chicago, and restored by Paul @Manganaro. @PlayerPiano @kenburnspbs
