Verdi: La Traviata Genova 1983 Sutherland Furlan Montefusco Bonynge BETTER SOUND
Credit to Andre for recording this!! This is a very well seeked recording, especially because it was Joan Sutherland's last Violetta (She is in stunning voice here!!). Date is March 17th 1983 at Teatro Margherita. Most of you may already know that Sutherland and Bonynge had walked out of this performance after a booing audience. I could go on and on telling the story that most of you may already know, but for those who don't, this is the shortest way I can put it (and it's still long): Tenor Lamberto Furlan (who was suggested to the Bonynges over another tenor) wasn't in the best vocal shape that night. Usually on occasion he was in decent voice and had no issues (wish some tenors today sounded as decent as him), especially at the Australian opera. He sang off key in Un Di Felice in Act 1 and the audience heckled him. From that point the audience already had a bad image of Furlan. From what previous comments on here say Furlan used to get nervous. Of course, booing didn't make him less nervous. Performance continues until the end of the Act 3 Parigi o Cara duet when Furlan sings again off key. The Italians who aren't having it boo and heckle Furlan. The whole performance stops. Sutherland (thinking this is completely unacceptable) says quietly to Furlan "We don't have to try and sing against that - come on." She nodded to Bonynge and all 3 went to their dressing rooms. As Sutherland and Bonynge are walking out in their street clothes, they see Furlan being dragged back by the director of the theater to complete the performance. Slavka Taskova Paoletti (who I thought kinda sounded like Beverly Sills at first lol) sang Violetta as a replacement for Joan and Aldo Pizzolo was the conductor as a replacement for Richard. Very long yes, but that is the full story. Anyhow, I've repitched this recording and improved the sound. No, I've NOT cut any of the booing in Act 3 thus it lasts for 15+ minutes. If you would like to skip the booing please jump to 2:09:33 Enjoy! Cast: Conductor: Richard Bonynge / Aldo Pizzolo (After Parigi o Cara) Violetta: Joan Sutherland / Slavka Taskova Paoletti (After Parigi o Cara) Alfredo: Lamberto Furlan Germont: Licinio Montefusco
