Inside a Collapsing 150-Year-Old Mine

A hidden, eroded entrance to this 1870s abandoned gold mine led to some surprisingly spectacular—and dangerous—underground workings. After navigating a substantial collapse in the haulage tunnel, I arrived at a Y-junction where the overhead stopes began. The timbering in this section was remarkable, consisting of whole tree trunks and branches arranged into overhead platforms supporting tons of stacked waste rock. More than 150 years later, much of this original timbering remains in place. The scattered zones of schist visible throughout the mine were among the targets of the old-time miners in their search for gold. ⛏️Become a Mine Crew member to receive exclusive posts, photos, bonus video clips, field notes, and occasional polls while supporting the channel:    / @abandonedmines11   *********** NOTE: This video was filmed in stunning 4K resolution at 60 fps.
