How to Romanticize your Life (when you HATE your job)
How to Romanticize your Life when you hate your job. I talk about how to romanticize your workday even if you want to quit your job, appreciating the small moments, and how to romanticize the everyday. Romanticizing life is like mindfulness and can be practiced everyday. In this slow living vlog I go about my workday and talk all things mental health, jobs, and divorcing ourselves from 'work' Ever since making my How to Romanticize your Life video the topic has stayed on my mind. In my last video I spoke about how this idea of romanticizing your life is akin to mindfulness, and is a practice that can be used in your everyday life. Still, when looking at videos on romanticizing your life I found what was being portrayed was not reflecting the everyday reality of most people Myself included - my video reflected my days off. The reality is most of us are going to school, maybe parenting, working, and sometimes, working a job you hate. This video isn’t just for people who hate their jobs, but for anyone looking on how to make this practice a part of their daily life and learn to appreciate those small moments a bit more. Now, I don’t hate my job, but my job can be very stressful and at times very mentally and physically exhausting. And when I’m getting caught up in these emotions I need to be extra sure to create space for me to appreciate the everyday. So I thought I would show how I do this practice in my everyday working life So how do you romanticize working? Now I do draw a line in this aspect. There needs to be a healthy balance on romanticizing working to make your day more pleasant, especially when your job is a source of anxiety, but not over romanticizing work either, as there is more to life than work During lunchtime I really find it helpful to remove myself from my work whenever possible. For me this means sitting at the local churchyard and separating myself physically from my job. This really helps me feel like I have some time truly on my own during the day, and the mental shift of being in a different place is really strong. Even when I do my best to ‘zone out’ when having lunch at work, I still find myself checking emails, answering questions, or just thinking about what I need to do next once lunch is over. Leaving allows me to really live in that moment, even just for 30 minutes. I’ll set a timer on my phone so I don’t have to keep on checking how much time I have left- I can focus on reading, sketching, or just sitting and decompressing from the morning’s work. When 5pm hits work is over- but it can still be hard to fully decompress and ‘switch off’ right away. I head back home to give Moira dinner. At this point it is really tempting for me to just sit down and veg out - exhausted from the day. But lately I’ve been forcing myself to get outside once I get home and drop some things off. I’ll go for a stroll around town, sit in the park, or go gardening if the weather is nice, and make use of my evening. I’ve found that this has really helped with my mental health, and stopped me from feeling like my days are revolving around my job alone. When going from work to home, work to home, every day without a break, those feelings can really pile up, and in a way it feels like the agency I have over my days isn’t accessible. By making use of my evenings, even something as small as a 30 minute walk, I’m reminded that I might not be able to control those 8 hours at work, but the rest of it is mine to have. Romanticizing your life is all about appreciating the small moments. Whether that is during a beautiful day off where you can do whatever you want, or taking advantage of the moments in between during your workday to allow yourself space to breathe. I know from experience that even with the best practices and intentions, some days are just really hard and sometimes out of our control. But by making these practices part of your everyday life, these moments can create spots of brightness and calm, and can even overtake the tough times I would love to know if you have any other ways that you practice romanticizing your life when you are working a job you don’t like, or during stressful times. Did any of these tips resonate with you? Are you going to start doing any of these? Romanticizing your life can be an everyday practice, and I’d love to hear your thoughts.
