Woman finds depression relief with electroconvulsive therapy
Sylvie Sallquist has struggled with severe depression and anxiety since she was a child, and this is her latest attempt to find relief. ECT - or electroconvulsive therapy - sends electric currents through the brain, essentially rewiring to better control mood and emotions. The patient goes under general anesthesia, and the currents provoke a seizure. The seizure lasts less than a minute, providing a burst of electrical activity. Dr. Randall Espinoza is the Medical Director of the Center for Neuromodulation at UW Medical Center – Northwest. He said ECT is not only effective, but it's one of the safest treatments in all of medicine. -------------------------------------------------- For more on the lead story: https://komonews.com/news/local/moder... _______________ Stay up to date with our social media: KOMO News on Facebook: / komonews KOMO News on Twitter: / komonews KOMO News on Instagram: / komo4 KOMO News on TikTok: / komo4seattle Subscribe to KOMO on YouTube: / @komonews Watch more top local news stories: • Video For all of the day’s top local and national news, visit http://www.komonews.com/ Watch our live newscasts and other live video at https://komonews.com/watch Download our iOS App: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/komo-...
