The game begins in 2013 when a mutated Cordyceps fungus causes a global outbreak, turning humans into violent infected creatures. During the chaos, Joel loses his daughter Sarah, a tragedy that deeply affects him. Twenty years later, Joel and his partner Tess are hired by Firefly leader Marlene to transport Ellie. After learning that Ellie is immune to the infection, Joel reluctantly agrees to help her reach the Fireflies, who hope to use her immunity to create a cure. During their journey, Joel and Ellie travel across the country, facing infected creatures, hostile survivors, and tragic losses. Along the way, they develop a strong father-daughter bond. After surviving numerous dangers, they finally reach a Firefly hospital in Salt Lake City. Joel discovers that creating a vaccine would require surgery that would kill Ellie. Refusing to lose another daughter figure, he fights through the hospital, rescues Ellie, kills the Firefly surgeon and Marlene, and escapes. Later, Joel lies to Ellie, claiming the Fireflies had stopped searching for a cure. Although suspicious, Ellie accepts Joel's explanation after he swears it is true. The game received widespread critical acclaim for its storytelling, characters, gameplay, visuals, and emotional narrative. It became one of the best-selling games of its generation and was later followed by The Last of Us Part II, a remaster, a remake, and an HBO television adaptation.
