Fariz RM was born on January 5, 1959, in Jakarta. His father, Rustam Munaf, of Minangkabau descent, was a singer at RRI Jakarta, while his mother, Hj Anna Reijnenberg, of Dutch-Betawi descent, was a piano teacher. One of Fariz RM's monumental musical projects was the recording of the album Badai Pasti Berlalu (1977). His debut album, Selangkah ke Seberang (A Step to the Other Side), released in 1979, also featured several Pegangsaan musicians, such as Chrisye and Yockie Suryoprayogo. One of his songs, "Sakura," released in 1980, was able to raise his name as a talented young musician at that time. Following Fariz RM's other hits, such as "Sandro Amaido," "Between Words," "Penawar Rindu," "Kurnia dan Pesona," "Musik Rasta," "Nada Kasih" performed with Neno Warisman, "Iman dan Godaan" with Dian Pramana Poetra, and "Barcelona."
