Jehovah Mekoddishkem: The LORD Who Sanctifies You

Holy, holy, holy is YHWH Tseva’ot; the whole earth is full of His glory. Before sanctification is a demand on us, it is a revelation of God. In Leviticus 20, YHWH speaks through Moses to Israel: “Consecrate yourselves… be holy… I am YHWH who sanctifies you.” The Hebrew root is qādash: to set apart, consecrate, make holy. The name is Jehovah Mekoddishkem — “the LORD, the One sanctifying you.” This is the wonder of holiness: God commands what only God can create. Israel must keep His statutes, but their obedience is grounded in His covenant action. In Exodus 31 and Ezekiel 20, the Sabbath is given as a sign, not merely of rest, but of identity: “that you may know that I am YHWH who sanctifies you.” They are not made holy by striving, empire, or productivity, but by belonging to the Holy One. Ezekiel sees the promise reach toward restoration: the nations will know YHWH sanctifies Israel when His sanctuary is in their midst forever. Sanctification is therefore not only separation from sin; it is separation unto Presence. The holy people are the people among whom the Holy God dwells. Psalm 99 calls us to exalt Him at His footstool, for He is qādōsh — holy. Isaiah sees this holiness blazing in heaven as the seraphim cry, “Qādōsh, qādōsh, qādōsh.” Isaiah is undone by his uncleanness, cleansed by God’s mercy, and sent. Worship becomes the doorway to confession, cleansing, and mission. In John 17, Jesus prays to the Father, “Sanctify them by Your truth; Your word is truth.” The Greek word is hagiazō — to make holy, consecrate, set apart. The Father sanctifies by truth. He does not form holy people through confusion, but through His Word. Then the Son Himself becomes our sanctification. Paul tells the Corinthians that Christ Jesus became our wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. Hebrews says Jesus is “He who sanctifies,” and that we have been sanctified through the offering of His body once for all. Outside the gate, Jesus suffered to sanctify the people with His own blood. The Son purchases holiness through His sacrifice. The Holy Spirit applies that holiness within us. Paul says believers are chosen through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. The Gentiles become an acceptable offering, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. The Corinthians, once marked by sin, are told: “You were washed… sanctified… justified… by the Spirit of our God.” Peter joins the harmony: chosen by the Father, sanctified by the Spirit, sprinkled by the blood of Jesus Christ. So sanctification is the music of the Trinity. The Father wills and speaks holiness. The Son embodies and purchases holiness. The Spirit indwells and produces holiness. One God, three distinct Persons, one holy work of love. Believer, your posture is not passive drifting or self-powered striving. Present your body as a living sacrifice. Cleanse yourself from defilement of flesh and spirit. Hunger and thirst for righteousness. Be holy because He is holy. Come to Jehovah Mekoddishkem with surrendered worship, and let the Lord who sanctifies you make your whole life His holy dwelling. Call to action: Consecrate yourself today.
