The first thing would be to choose a suitable plot of land. Although olive trees are not very demanding in terms of climate and soil, it would be advisable to conduct a climate study of the area and perform a soil analysis. Olive trees can withstand temperatures as low as -8°C in winter. Another important issue is waterlogging; olive trees do not tolerate it well. It is important to avoid waterlogging. The depth of usable soil should be greater than 70 cm for root development. Water availability is important. Irrigation requires a minimum of 1500 to 2500 m³/ha. The varieties best suited to the super-intensive system are Arbequina, Arbosana, and the Greek variety Koroneiki. Arbequina is the least sensitive to cold. Drier tubing with integrated, pressure-compensating emitters, between 16 and 20 mm in diameter, is used. The planting density will depend on the soil type, variety vigor, and available machinery. In irrigated systems, planting densities of 4 x 1.5 m and 3.75 x 1.35 m are used, which equates to 1600 and 1900 olive trees/ha, respectively. In dryland farming, 1,000 to 1,300 trees per hectare are planted in densities of 7 x 1.35 m, 6.0 x 1.5 m, or 5.5 x 1.5 m. Planting with a north-south orientation provides better sunlight exposure.
