This place near Dhaka might be one of the few places where 20-30 date trees are found together. We visited there early in the morning to have the raw taste of fresh date juice. This is symbolic and synonymous with Bangladeshi winters. This Date sap is famous food over the people of the rural as well as the urban of Bangladesh. It contains high natural sugars and others natural form. Numbers of others popular foods are also made from or using this Date sap like date Jaggery or Palm sugar, pitha etc. "BHAPA-PITHAS”, which are rice cakes with coconut and date jaggery, steaming cups of tea, monkey caps and “khejur er rosh”: all of these are synonymous with Bangladeshi winters. “Khejur er rosh,” or date juice, is the sweet sap extracted from the soft trunk of the top-most part of the date tree. Around the rural areas, it is a common sight, a clay pot attached to the top of date trees during winters. Be it a winter picnic or a visit to grandma in your village, winter mornings mean the extraction of this sap from the tree and large glasses of date juice with sweet, steaming pithas. If you are not lucky enough to head out of Dhaka, you may find date juice being sold in Manik Mia Avenue and Chandrima Uddyan in the early mornings. Or you can also head over to Mawa Ghat, a short drive from Dhaka, where you will find glasses of fresh date juice being sold if you reach early enough. Although highly popular in its natural form, a lot of times date juice is reduced to a thick consistency, forming molasses to be eaten with chitoi pitha or as a sweetener. High in natural sugars, this is a natural energy drink minus all the artificial packaging. Given the sweet details of this famous drink of rural Bengal, a certain amount of caution needs to be taken when consuming this drink. With the outbreak of Nipah virus, the popularity of date juice has gone down. But if the clay pot and date tree is covered with a net so as to prevent bats from contaminating the drink, it can be considered safe to consume. With that in mind, enjoy the sweet nectar of this tree. Head over to your village or arrange a daylong excursion to a local village around Dhaka and savour the delicate joys of foggy winter mornings.
