Surely this was due to the mild climate, the different sources of drinking water, the fertile soil with an abundance of fruit, the variety of both sedentary and migratory game and the abundance of fish in the various inlets along the coast. The Vieste territory, rich in flint, allowed man in prehistoric times to create lithic artifacts used as tools for work, hunting or defense. About 3 kilometers from the town, a vast flint mine was discovered, defined as one of the largest in Europe.The remains of Iron Age tombs are also visible in the vicinity of the castle. In the municipal area, there was also a dolmen which, however, was irreparably destroyed. In fact, the archaeological finds found in the Vieste territory are very often left to themselves and this determines their deterioration and destruction.
