On March 30, 1979, José María Velasco Ibarra, the only Ecuadorian to have served five terms as President of the Republic, died in Quito, a victim of an intestinal infection and consumed by grief. His end was marked by tragedy: weeks earlier, he had lost the love of his life, Corina Parral de Velasco, who died in Buenos Aires after falling from a public bus, as the couple lacked a car or material possessions. Velasco Ibarra, with his unmistakable oratory and his famous phrase, “Give me a balcony and I’ll be president!”, symbolized both the hope and the political instability of Ecuador. Upon returning to the country after Corina’s death, he uttered his last words: “I have come to meditate and to die.” A few days later, his prophecy came true.
