A River Reborn: The Restoration of the Upper Arkansas

The California Gulch Superfund Site, located in and around Leadville, Colorado, covers approximately 18 square miles in Lake County. This area includes the city of Leadville, parts of the Leadville Historic Mining District, and a section of the Arkansas River from the confluence of California Gulch downstream to the confluence of Two-Bit Gulch. Former mining operations have resulted in metals contamination of surface water, groundwater, soil, and sediment. This video summarizes the effects of mining contamination on waterways and lands in and near Leadville, as well as the impact on associated natural resources and public use. Representatives from the California Gulch Natural Resource Trustees and partner conservation organizations discuss completed restoration projects within the Upper Arkansas River Basin. These projects aim to improve in-stream habitat, revitalize a decimated fishery, provide erosion control, reintroduce or support native species, manage riparian habitat, create conservation easements, and deliver multiple-use benefits.
