Tsentaroy (Upper Tsentaroy) (Chechen: Цӏоьнтара) is a village in the Nozhay-Yurtovsky District of the Chechen Republic. It is the administrative center of the Tsentaroy rural settlement. The village is located in the southwestern part of the Nozhay-Yurtovsky District, 30 km southwest of the district center, Nozhay-Yurt, and 88 km southeast of Grozny. The nearest settlements are the villages of Bas-Gordali and Gordali to the north, Engenoy to the northeast, Koren-Benoy to the east, Belgatoy to the south, Barze to the southwest, and Verkhnie Kurchali to the west. The village is the ancestral village of the Tsentaroi taipa and is often called "Upper Tsentaroi" (Chechen: Лекха Цӏоьнтара). According to local legend, the village of "Цӏоьнтара" was founded by Suntar (pronunciations: Sintar, Sontar—the Chechen word for "small tree"), a native of the Nashkha community in the present-day Galanchozh District of Chechnya.[5][6] The village changed its location several times. Initially, it was located in the southern part of the Tsentoroi lands, closer to the village of Belgatoy. However, due to a plague epidemic (Chechen: Un), the surviving residents moved to the southeastern part, closer to the Aksay River (Chechen: Ya'ssa) and the village of Benoi. Later, severe landslides in the chosen location forced the residents to seek a new settlement. They found this place in the upper part of what is now Tsentoroi. When choosing a new settlement site, they considered its suitability for a well. A well dug at that time in the upper part of the present-day village remains standing to this day. As the population grew, the villagers first settled the lower part of the village, covered by dense forest[7], and after settling the lower part, they began to repopulate the former settlements. The memory of these Tsontaroi residents' movements has been preserved in the village's toponymic names: "yubrtasht1e"—the original location of the village, and "yurt"—the location of the second village. In 1989, the village was again struck by landslides, and a significant portion of the village's residents moved to the plains near Grozny, founding a new village—Tsentoroi-Yurt. The Tsontaroi residents took an active part in their people's wars of liberation, during which Russian troops repeatedly destroyed and burned the village of Tsentoroi: in 1832, during the march of Russian troops under General Baron Rosen against the Dagestani village of Gimry, where the murids, led by Imam Gazi-Magomed, took up defensive positions; in 1845, during the retreat of Russian troops under Count Vorontsov, who had been routed near the village of Dargo (the capital of the Imamate); In 1877, during the suppression of the anti-colonial uprising led by Imam Alibek-Khadzhi; In 1921, during the war against the establishment of Soviet power in Chechnya; In 1996 and 2001, during the last two wars. During the latter war, Tsentoroi was completely destroyed. On May 6, 1920, at the historic summit of Khetashon-Kort, a meeting of delegates elected from all districts of Chechnya (Mehk-Khel) was held for the last time. It confirmed the course for the creation of an independent Chechen state. Imam Shamil's grandson, Said-Bey, was offered the leadership of the Resistance. [8] In response, the Soviet government launched military operations against Chechnya, which continued until the spring of 1921, when peace was concluded on the terms of full independence for the Chechen people in their internal affairs and amnesty for all Resistance participants. In 1944, after the deportation of the Chechens and Ingush and the abolition of the Chechen-Ingush ASSR, the village of Tsentaroy was renamed Tsatanikh and resettled by people from the village of Tsatanikh in neighboring Dagestan.[9] After the restoration of the Chechen-Ingush ASSR, in 1958 the village was returned to its former name, Tsentaroy.
