Who Was King Solomon? | Biblical Figures - And the Construction of the Temple Capsules for the Soul Ricardo Bonilla The name Solomon comes from the Hebrew word Shlomoh, which comes from the root "shalom" and means "peaceful" or "peace." God, through the prophet Nathan, named Solomon Yedidyah, which means "the beloved or chosen one of Jehovah," signifying God's covenant with Solomon, which is why it did not become his given name. He was born around 988 BC in Jerusalem. The tenth son of David and the second son of Bathsheba. Solomon is credited with authoring the biblical texts titled the Book of Ecclesiastes, the Book of Proverbs, and the Song of Songs. Solomon was between 16 and 17 years old when he succeeded his father around 970 BC. He became the third king of Israel and reigned for 40 years between 970 and 928 BC. He was the third and last king of the United Monarchy (that is, before the separation of the Israelite territory into the kingdoms of Judah and Israel). Before David's death, he gave him instructions to govern wisely: he charged him with the first and most important thing: to keep God's commandments. He gave him specific instructions regarding certain men who had acted wrongly during his reign and in the usurpation of the throne from Solomon. These men were Joab, Shimei, and Abiathar. Upon taking the throne, the first thing Solomon did was to execute the acts of justice his father had instructed him to do: against Abiathar, whom he removed from his position as high priest for having been complicit with Adonijah and exiled him to Anathoth. Regarding Joab (general in David's army), whom he killed for his betrayal of Adonijah and his previous crimes. And regarding Shimei for cursing David, he imprisoned him and then ordered him to be executed for violating his imprisonment. Solomon forgave his brother Adonijah for trying to usurp the throne, but Adonijah attempted another plan to remove his brother from the throne. This consisted of asking the king to take his father David's last concubine, Abishag, as a wife. However, King Solomon denied his request because he discovered his plan, and he was sentenced to death. Solomon began to rule between the ages of 18 and 20. He had faithful friends such as Benaiah, who took Joab's place and became commander-in-chief of the army, and Zadok, who took Abiathar's place as high priest. It was at this time that God appeared to him at Gibeon, the main high place where Solomon offered sacrifices. It was there that God recognized him and offered him whatever Solomon wanted. It was here that he recognized God's great goodness and also his inadequacy in governing, and he asked God for wisdom. Solomon's wisdom was illustrated in a particular story that made him famous among his people and those around him. This demonstrated the wisdom with which Solomon governed. It was the case of two women living in the same house. They had each given birth to a son two days apart. One of them unexpectedly lay on top of her son and killed him. When she realized this, she switched the son at night with the other's, but the other woman realized the fraud and came to the king to claim her right as the mother of the living child. The case was complicated. The dilemma was: who was the true mother of the living child? Both claimed the child with great interest, and neither wanted to acknowledge being the mother of the dead child. CONSTRUCTION OF THE TEMPLE Hiram, King of Tyre, greatly admired David and congratulated Solomon on his accession to the throne. Solomon informed Hiram of his intention to build a temple in honor of God and that he needed his help in acquiring the cedar of Lebanon tree planted there. He also needed his help in acquiring his employees, who were skilled in logging and woodworking. In exchange for good compensation, King Hiram was pleased to see that Solomon was following in the footsteps of his father David and was willing to help Solomon in every way. This holy place was designed by God through the Holy Spirit. David was given the plan for this temple, and construction began in the fourth year of Solomon's reign. The construction time was seven and a half years from the first foundation to the completion of the entire project, between 960 and 966 BC. This temple is known as Solomon's Temple or the First Temple. It was his most famous building project. #CapsulesForTheSoul #RicardoBonilla #preachb #biblicalcharacters Keywords: Who was King Solomon? - And the Construction of the Temple, Who was King Solomon summary?, Who was the builder of Solomon's Temple?, What is Solomon's Temple according to the Bible?, What was Solomon's sin in the Bible?, What did Solomon ask of God?, What was King Solomon like?, What good things did King Solomon do?, Solomon, Biography of King Solomon, the history of King Solomon, did King Solomon repent before he died, how old was King Solomon when he died?
