Interstate 78 eastbound

Through eastern Pennsylvania, I-78 links the state's capital region with the Lehigh Valley cities of Allentown and Bethlehem along its way to the New York City metro area. Interstate 78 connects eastern Pennsylvania with Newark, NJ and New York City across northern New Jersey. The Holland Tunnel crosses under the Hudson River between Jersey City and lower Manhattan. It opened in 1927 as the first automobile link between New Jersey and Manhattan. Its design was groundbreaking as introducing the first modern tunnel ventilation system. The tunnel is named for Clifford Holland, the tunnel's chief engineer who died before the project could be completed.
