RC Lens 3-1 Deportivo La Corogne - Ligue des Champions (23/10/2002)

After their defeat in Spain, Lens' Champions League campaign seemed all but over, but in just one half, hope was rekindled! One half: that's all it took for Lens to score three goals against a Deportivo La Coruña side so technically gifted and confident in the first half. Indeed, even though Joël Muller fielded a significantly different starting eleven compared to the one that faced Ajaccio, it felt like we were seeing the same old problems as on Saturday: a plethora of clumsy errors, long balls lacking precision... In short, that was all it took for the defensively solid Spaniards to easily take the lead with a rather silly goal where the Lens defense seemed to freeze up and Guillaume Warmuz ventured a little too far in front of the formidable striker Makaay (15th minute). The rest of the first half remained entirely in favor of the Spaniards. How could Lens possibly come back? This is where we would have loved to be in the Lens dressing room during halftime, because a completely transformed team returned to the pitch. Lens pressed forward, the pressure in front of Juanmi's goal was immense, and finally, a shot from Coulibaly (61st minute) deflected by the Spanish defense brought the two teams level. Galvanized, the Sang et Or (Blood and Gold) surged forward even further and deservedly added two more goals... Goal scorers: COULIBALY (61'), MOREIRA (79') & THOMERT (85') for Lens. MAKAAY (15') for Deportivo. Follow us also on... Facebook:   / lepubliciensois   Twitter:   / lepubliclensois   Instagram:   / lepubliclensois
