Virgulino Ferreira da Silva, Lampião, the King of Cangaço, with his gang of cangaceiros, invaded the city of Belmonte in the state of Pernambuco on October 20, 1922, with the main objective of eliminating Colonel Luiz Gonzaga Gomes Ferraz, an enemy of Ioiô Maroto, a friend and relative of the former leader Sinhô Pereira, who, upon leaving the cangaço, asked Lampião to eliminate the Colonel.
