Zambia’s August 2026 general election has become a focal point of political tension, with sweeping electoral reforms adding 70 new parliamentary seats and expanding representation to 226. While the government describes the changes as democratic deepening, opposition parties accuse authorities of gerrymandering and political engineering. At the same time, a fractured opposition front featuring multiple presidential candidates raises concerns that internal divisions may weaken electoral competitiveness against President Hakainde Hichilema.
