An adult oak tree weighs about 4,500 kilograms. Where did all that mass come from? Not from the ground. Nor from water. Nor from minerals. Almost all the physical mass of a tree comes from an invisible gas floating in the atmosphere: what you exhale. A 4,500-kilogram tree is, in the most literal sense, solidified air. And it doesn't stop at trees. The carbon in your muscles, bones, and brain was atmospheric CO₂ not long ago. As Feynman said, understanding what's really happening doesn't impoverish the experience.
