The Great War | Russia's First Revolution of 1917
00:00 - 05:00 The Empire Drifts Toward Revolution 05:00 - 17:26 Bread, Strikes, and the Mutiny in Petrograd 17:26 - 23:40 The Collapse of Authority 23:40 - 31:30 The End of the Romanov Dynasty As World War I continued at full speed, Tsar Nicholas left Petrograd on March 7 and went to Mogilev. The next day, on March 8, women poured into the streets together with the striking Putilov workers. The demonstrations that began with the cry of “Bread!” grew larger and changed in character when the state failed to respond. The people, exhausted by years of the regime, turned the protests into an uprising. But the people were not the only ones tired of the regime. The soldiers who were expected to stop the demonstrations gradually began to join the uprising started by the public. From the third day onward, the protests began to shake the foundations of the throne. Once the weakness of the Tsarist regime became clear, the demonstrations quickly turned into a revolution. The most critical days on the road to the Red Revolution would go down in history as the February Revolution. The events that unfolded within a single week prepared the end of the three-century-old Romanov dynasty. The February Revolution ended the Tsarist regime, but it could not build a stable system in its place. The country drifted into deeper chaos with each passing day. As the end of the Romanovs approached, Tsar Nicholas continued to make one mistake after another. We hope you enjoy the episode.
