Alannah Myles Black Velvet HQ with Lyrics in Description
Track 3 from her self-titled debut solo album released in 1989 copyright Atlantic Records. It was recorded at McLear Place, Eastern Sound, Soundtown Studios and Sounds interchange, all in Toronto. It was produced by David Tyson, who along with his songwriting partner Cristopher Ward, co-wrote half the songs on the album. Myles was born in Toronto and became interested in music at an early age, writing her first songs at the age of nine. When she turned eighteen she began performing solo gigs around southern Ontario and met Christopher Ward, who became her boyfriend. An aspiring artist himself, he helped her form a backing band and she performed blues covers while working on her original material. Her beauty allowed her to pursue opportunities as an actress in commercials and guest appearances on TV shows, which helped finance her musical ambitions. Christopher Ward was later hired as one of the first VJ's on Much Music, Canada's music video station and used his position to help Alannah further her career. They shopped her demo around and she secured a recording contract with Atlantic Records in 1987. Ward's songwriting with David Tyson was the key to her success and their song "Black Velvet," written as a tribute to Elvis Presley, exploded worldwide. The single reached No. 24 in France, No. 10 in Canada, No. 4 in Finland and Ireland, No. 3 in Australia, Denmark and the Netherlands, No. 2 in Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, New Zealand, West Germany and the U.K. and No. 1 in Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the U.S. It was certified Gold in Austria, Germany and the U.S., Platinum in Australia, Denmark, Sweden and the U.K. and 3X Platinum in New Zealand. It won Myles the Grammy Award for "Best Female Rock Vocal Performance." She became known as a one-hit wonder but the album has many other great songs that deserved more success. "Love Is," "Lover of Mine" and "Still Got This Thing" were also Top 40 hits in Canada. The album reached No. 9 in the Netherlands, No. 5 in New Zealand and the U.S., No. 4 in Iceland, No. 3 in the U.K., No. 2 in Australia, Austria, Germany and Sweden and No. 1 in Finland, Norway, Switzerland and Canada. It was certified Gold in Austria and the U.K., Platinum in Finland, Germany, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland and the U.S. and 3X Platinum in Australia. It was the first debut album by a Canadian artist to achieve Diamond status in Canada and is estimated to have sold over six million copies worldwide.
