The harbinger of spring, the reawakening of nature, and a legacy of thousands of years: Nowruz! Nowruz, meaning "new day" in Persian, is celebrated every year on March 21st, the spring equinox, the day when night and day are equal. This ancient festival, celebrated by peoples living in a wide geographical area from Central Asia to the Balkans and the Middle East, is also included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list today. So, what are the hidden meanings behind the Nowruz rituals that have continued for thousands of years? Here are some of the traditions we explain in our video: 🔥 Jumping Over Fire: According to ancient Turkic and Iranian beliefs, fire is a symbol of purification and cleansing. People believe that by jumping over the fire, they will leave behind illnesses and evils, saying "let my burdens and misfortunes stay with you." 🌱 Semeni Tradition: Representing the rebirth and abundance of nature, "semeni" is prepared by sprouting wheat or barley and symbolizes a fruitful agricultural production throughout the year. 💧 Water Rituals: Expressing the continuity of life and purification. People jump over the water believing it purifies it, and it is thought that worries are released into the water. 🥚 Egg Cracking: Representing the beginning of life, productivity, and abundance, eggs are painted in various colors and cracked together in solidarity. 🍲 Nevruz Feast and 7 Dishes (Heft-Sin): Special desserts such as "Sümelek" (or Semenu), made from wheat germ and symbolizing solidarity, are prepared at the table. In addition, 7 types of food whose names begin with the letter "S" are placed on the table. The origins of Nevruz lie in Turkish epics about the melting of iron mountains and the emergence from Ergenekon, while in Iranian and Kurdish mythology, it extends to the legend of Kawa the Blacksmith who triumphed over a tyrannical king, or to the legendary King Jamshid who saved living beings from the harsh winter.
