Viagem de Fusca│Cidade de Gameleira PE

In the Mata Sul region, there is a city named after a tree, Gameleira. The first inhabitants of the region were the Cariri and Uruá Indians. The existence of numerous gamela trees led to the place being named Gameleira. It was in the 18th century that the clearing of the jungle and the catechization of the Indians took place, and it was then that a sugar mill was built between the Boa Vista and Cachoeira Grande sites, which took the name Gameleira. When the Praieira Revolution occurred, a struggle between liberals and conservatives for control of the government of Pernambuco, in 1848, some Praieiros, that is, liberals, settled at the foot of the hill called Francisco Pinto. The Praieiros of the region were led by José Pedro Veloso da Silveira, resident at the Lages sugar mill, a profound connoisseur of the region, alongside Nunes Machado. From the hill of Francisco Pinto, these revolutionaries marched to Água Preta, a place of constant conflicts between Praeiros and Guaribus. The economy of Gameleira is focused on the cultivation of sugarcane, corn, cassava, and beans, but it also has good production of rubber, lemons, mangoes, and passion fruit. The city is located north of Ribeirão, south of Água Preta, and east of Rio Formoso. The distance to the capital (Recife) is 99 km. The city celebrates its anniversary on April 10th. According to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), it currently has approximately 27,912 inhabitants. Administratively, the municipality is formed by the main district of Gameleira and the villages of Cuiambuca, José da Costa, and Cachoeira Lisa.
