School: Hyoho Taisha Ryu Event: 41st All Japan Kobudo Demonstration Date: 04/02/2018 Venue: Nippon Budokan Representative: Uehara Eriko (15th Soke) -- PRESENTATION: HYOHO TAISHA RYU RYU KENJUTSU -- The Hyōhō Taisha Ryū is a school of Kenjutsu (Japanese traditional fencing) founded by Kurando Marume during the early Edo period (1603-1868). The name “Taisha Ryū” is deliberately written with a missing Chinese character for the word “Tai”, so that one can replace it by several different meanings, all of them expressing an aspect of the school’s teaching. Those meanings can be “Significant”, “Body”, “Wait”, “Opposition”, or “Thick”, associated with the character “Sha”, which represents the loss, or the action of throwing away. The first one, in particular, is supposed to represent the loss of a great teacher in the person of Kurando Marume’s own master, Nobutsuna Koizumi.
