RALPH SNOWBALL: Capturing Newcastle

In late 1988 some 8000 glass plate negatives were discovered in the basement of a Newcastle home. These images, having been been hidden for over 60 years had all been taken by one man; Ralph Snowball. These images aren’t just snapshots, they’re portals. From the dirt-covered faces of indentured mine workers to the hustle and bustle of 19th century streets, one man documented it all. The clarity, the raw humanity and the sheer scope of his vision is nothing short of astonishing. From 1885 to 1924, Newcastle changed radically, expanding from a collection of mining villages into a thriving city. Horses and buggies became cars, sailing ships became steam driven and electricity was introduced. This film explores the birth of our city and the people who built it.
