Arguably Germany's most famous sailor looks back 40 years. When he arrived in Heligoland on May 7, 1958, he received a sandwich from the harbormaster. This, along with a fair amount of suspicion, was – initially – the reward for the first solo circumnavigation by a German. Only later did Wilfried Erdmann receive widespread recognition.
