Eriskay and a Decision to Make | Outer Hebrides Road Trip

After a surprisingly warm night in the campervan, we wake up with the side door still open and a decision to make. Do we stick to our original plans, or do we head for Barra a few days earlier than expected? As we continue our journey through the Outer Hebrides, the day takes us from an ancient mystery near a pub, to the honesty-box showers of Lochboisdale Harbour, and then across another causeway to the beautiful island of Eriskay. Our first stop is a standing stone that has stood for more than 4,000 years. Who put it there and why? Nobody really knows, making it one of those fascinating places where history leaves us with more questions than answers. At Lochboisdale Harbour, we discover one of the most trusting shower systems we've come across, before setting off in search of a coffee. Being a Sunday in the Outer Hebrides, that's not quite as straightforward as it sounds. Crossing onto Eriskay, we explore an island packed with character, history and unexpected stories. From the quirky tradition of decorating houses with the hulls of old fishing boats to the life of Father Allan MacDonald (1859–1905), the much-loved priest, Gaelic poet and folklorist who left a lasting mark on the island, there's plenty to discover. And hanging over the whole day is one question: do we continue exploring, or do we take the ferry and move on to Barra ahead of schedule?
