"Marado', the Power of Myth" is a journey with Andrea Luchetta to Naples to recount one of the purest examples of the power of football. Maradona stopped being a player and became a symbol in 1984, as soon as his name was associated with Naples. In the Spanish Quarter, Diego Armando's most famous mural became one of the levers for the area's rebirth, including tourism: "Diego filled the void left by the State after defeating the clans," explains Salvatore Iodice, who restored the mural. The impact on the "Bronx" in San Giovanni a Teduccio was even more profound. When Jorit painted a gigantic mural of Maradona, it was as if the neighborhood finally found its place on the city map, overcoming the stigma that had confined it to tales of degradation and the Camorra. According to Federico Cafiero De Raho, the national anti-mafia prosecutor, "the Camorra takes away freedom in exchange for bread. The myth of Maradona, however, looks upward, to hope, and spurs action to improve." The true power of the myth is rooted in the most personal sphere. "For many," explains psychologist Elena De Rosa, "Maradona has a value similar to a mother figure." Then there is an archetypal Maradona, whose myth resonates far beyond Naples, fueled by Diego Armando's voracity in devouring the boundaries between light and darkness. "Talking about Maradona means accepting the ambivalence that inhabits every human being," explains Daniel Pennac.
