Taking a 1920s Oxford Old English Exam
Support me on patreon (thank you!): / grahamscheper In 1920, Tolkien (who was working as a tutor) sent a practice exam to a student at Somerville College, Oxford, to help her study. These questions, many of which were taken verbatim from previous exams, give us a fascinating insight into what Old English education at Oxford might have been like 100 years ago. In today's video, I walk through the exam for the first time, seeing how I would have done if I had to take it myself. Enjoy! #oldenglish #anglosaxon #tolkien I found these questions on the Thoughts on Tolkien blog, which you can access here: https://thoughtsontolkien.wordpress.com/ ^^^ Cannot recommend it enough! 00:00 - Intro 01:11 - The exam Social: Twitter: https://x.com/grahamscheper Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/grahamschepe...
