In 1422, Jang Yeong-sil created the gyeongjeomjigi (water clock) by measuring the water clocks already in use. However, gyeongjeomjigi relied on human labor, and errors often resulted in punishment. After extensive research and experimentation, Jang Yeong-sil developed the Jagyeongnu, an automatic water clock that could tell the time without human intervention. The Jagyeongnu consists of two components: a water clock, a timekeeping device, and an automatic time signaling device. The large, 6-meter-tall water clock used mechanical amplification to strike bells, drums, and gongs, indicating the time.
