Im Inneren der He 111 – Hitlers Glasnasen-Bomber der Luftwaffe

Inside the He 111 — Hitler's most iconic medium bomber of the Luftwaffe. Originally disguised as a civilian passenger plane for Lufthansa, the Heinkel He 111 concealed its true purpose from the very beginning: a military bomber with a revolutionary, vertically mounted bomb bay directly behind the cockpit. With its distinctive glass-nose canopy, inverted Jumo 211 engines, and over 6,500 built, it became a symbol of the German air war — from the Spanish Civil War to the Battle of Britain and the Stalingrad Airlift. But its ambitious design came at a fatal price: dead sectors, weak armament, and a Duralumin skin that offered little resistance to the Spitfire's 20mm ammunition. In this video, we reveal its interior and its design strengths and weaknesses. What made the He 111 the Luftwaffe's main bomber? Why was the Jumo 211 V12 mounted upside down? And how did the glass nose become its death sentence in the Spitfire battle? Find the answers in this look inside a legend. ... 📌 CHAPTERS: 00:00 Introduction: From the Lufthansa passenger plane 01:30 The camouflage revealed: Bomber under civilian clothes 03:30 The Jumo 211: A V12 upside down 06:00 Low center of gravity: The advantage 08:00 The ESAC: Bombs while standing upright 10:30 The volume problem 13:00 The greenhouse: Optical marvel 15:00 MG 15 and the 60 percent blind spot 17:30 6,000 meters: When the Spitfire comes 20:00 Hispano 20 mm versus Duralumin 22:00 Minus 30 degrees: Plexiglas shatters 23:30 Legacy and Outlook ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ✈️ ABOUT THE HEINKEL HE 111 The Heinkel He 111 was one of the Luftwaffe's most iconic bombers of World War II. Developed in the mid-1930s, it was outwardly declared a civilian passenger aircraft for Lufthansa—a cover to circumvent the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. In reality, the Reich Air Ministry had planned a modern medium-range bomber from the outset. Over 6,500 He 111s were built—making it the second most produced bomber in Germany after the Ju 88. Its centerpiece was two Junkers Jumo 211 V12 engines—installed as an "inverted V12" with the cylinder heads facing downwards. This design lowered the center of gravity and relocated the exhaust and radiator beneath the engine. This gave the pilot and bombardier an unobstructed view over the wings—an invaluable advantage in bombing raids. The most striking feature was its fully glazed nose cone—often called a "greenhouse" or "glass nose" by pilots. The asymmetrical arrangement gave the pilot and bombardier almost 270 degrees of all-around visibility—perfect for navigation. However, this very delicate Plexiglas structure became a weak point in aerial combat: fragile, barely bulletproof, and brittle at low temperatures. The interior also featured an unusual solution: the ESAC bomb magazine. Unlike most bombers, the bombs here were not suspended horizontally, but vertically in compartments directly behind the cockpit. This kept the center of gravity stable—but at the cost of volume. Heavy bombs over a ton could only be carried on the outer wing panels, which reduced the speed to around 250 km/h. Its greatest weakness was its defensive armament. The He 111 usually carried only 7.92 mm MG 15 machine guns, hand-operated with small 75-round drums. Combined with the blind spots of the cockpit, this resulted in a protection gap of up to 60 percent—a nightmare as soon as modern fighters like the Supermarine Spitfire joined the squadron. In the Battle of Britain in 1940, it paid a high price: 20 mm Hispano cannons easily tore through the thin duralumin skin, while the brittle Plexiglas canopy shattered in low temperatures. Nevertheless, the He 111 remained in service until the end of the war—as a bomber, Stalingrad transport, and V-1 launch vehicle. The story of the He 111 is a cautionary tale: a technically fascinating machine, brilliant in many details—yet vulnerable due to structural design choices. Hitler's glass-nosed bomber, poised between elegance and weakness. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 🔔 SUBSCRIBE for more insights into the inner workings of legendary weapons, tanks, aircraft, and ships—from the Wehrmacht to the Bundeswehr. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 🔔 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ⚠️ NOTICE This video is for historical, technical, and educational purposes only.
