The basic concept of GMDSS established that search and rescue authorities located on land, as well as vessels in the immediate vicinity of the ship in distress, will be quickly alerted to the incident. Because it is so important for navigational safety, the Brazilian Navy always includes questions on this topic in the amateur captain exams.
