Shani is a deva and son of Surya and his wifeChhaya, hence also known as Chayyaputra. He is the elder brother of Yama, the Hindu god of death, who in some scriptures corresponds to the deliverance of justice. Interestingly, Surya's two sons Shani and Yama judge.It is said that when Shani opened his eyes as a baby for the very first time, the sun went into an eclipse, which clearly denotes the impact of Shani on astrological charts. He is known as the greatest teacher and well wisher for the righteous as well the greatest punisher for those who follow the path of evil, betrayal, backstabbing and unjust revenge. धर्मग्रंथो के अनुसार सूर्य की पत्नी संज्ञा की छाया के गर्भ से शनि देव का जन्म हुआ, जब शनि देव छाया के गर्भ में थे तब छाया भगवान शंकर की भक्ति में इतनी ध्यान मग्न थी की उसने अपने खाने पिने तक शुध नहीं थी जिसका प्रभाव उसके पुत्र पर पड़ा और उसका वर्ण श्याम हो गया !शनि के श्यामवर्ण को देखकर सूर्य ने अपनी पत्नी छाया पर आरोप लगाया की शनि मेरा पुत्र नहीं हैं ! तभी से शनि अपने पिता से शत्रु भाव रखते थे ! शनि देव ने अपनी साधना तपस्या द्वारा शिवजी को प्रसन्न कर अपने पिता सूर्य की भाँति शक्ति प्राप्त की और शिवजी ने शनि देव को वरदान मांगने को कहा, तब शनि देव ने प्रार्थना की कि युगों युगों में मेरी माता छाया की पराजय होती रही हैं, मेरे पिता सूर्य द्वारा अनेक बार अपमानित किया गया हैं ! अतः माता की इच्छा हैं कि मेरा पुत्र अपने पिता से मेरे अपमान का बदला ले और उनसे भी ज्यादा शक्तिशाली बने ! तब भगवान शंकर ने वरदान देते हुए कहा कि नवग्रहों में तुम्हारा सर्वश्रेष्ठ स्थान होगा ! मानव तो क्या देवता भी तुम्हरे नाम से भयभीत रहेंगे ! In Vedic astrology the planet Saturn is called Shanaiswara. In Sanskrit Shanaiswara comes from SANISCHARA, which means, “slow mover”. From Shanaiswara we get the word “shun”, which means to ignore, or lose awareness of something. Thus, Saturn represents a loss of awareness, or ignorance. This loss of awareness can also mean the diminishing awareness of the material world of manifestation.
