Frozen shoulder is a condition that causes stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint. This condition is common in people with diabetes and those who do not use their arms for long periods of time. In frozen shoulder, the shoulder capsule, which lies between the ball and socket joint of the arm, becomes so thick and stiff that it makes it difficult to move the shoulder. The thickened shoulder capsule takes up more space and thus provides less fluid (synovial fluid) to provide lubrication. This causes pain and restricts the shoulder when bending the arm, and is known as frozen shoulder. It is estimated that it affects approximately 3 percent of the population. Causes of Frozen Shoulder: The shoulder has a ball and socket joint filled with synovial fluid at the end of the upper arm. The bone sits in this socket. The most common causes of frozen shoulder include the following: Decreased concentration of the shoulder's synovial fluid. Shoulder bone fracture. Deficient connective tissue supply to the shoulder capsule. Stiffness of the ball and socket joints in the shoulder. Outflow of synovial fluid.
