HOW TO CUT A SIMPLE HALTER NECK DRESS

MATERIALS NEEDED Fabric: crepe, scuba, duchess satin, ponte knit, or stretch cotton Lining (recommended for neat neckline) Measuring tape Pattern paper / cardboard Tailor’s chalk Scissors Sewing machine Interfacing (for neckline & neck band) Hook & eye / button / invisible zip (back or side) 📐 MEASUREMENTS REQUIRED Bust Under-bust Waist Hip Shoulder to bust point Shoulder to waist Gown length Neck circumference (for halter band) 🧵 STEP 1: DRAFT THE BASIC BODICE WITH PRINCESS DART Draft a basic fitted bodice (front & back). Mark the bust point. Convert the bust dart into a princess seam: Draw a line from mid-shoulder (or neckline) through the bust point down to the hem. Cut along the line to separate: Center front panel Side front panel Repeat for the back if you want a princess-seamed back. 👗 STEP 2: CREATE THE HALTER NECKLINE On the front center panel, design a slanted halter neckline: From underarm curve up to the neck. The neckline should sit close to the neck without choking. Cut off the shoulder area completely. Draft a neck band: Length = neck circumference + 1 inch Width = 2½–3 inches (folded) ✂️ STEP 3: CUTTING THE FABRIC Cut the following: Center front (1 on fold) Side front (2) Center back (2) Side back (2) Halter neck band (1) Lining pieces same as bodice Skirt portion (straight, A-line, or slight flare) 🪡 STEP 4: SEWING THE BODICE Sew center front to side front (princess seam). Press seams toward the side. Sew back panels together. Join front and back at the side seams. Attach lining to bodice at neckline and armholes. Turn and topstitch neatly. 👑 STEP 5: ATTACH THE HALTER NECK BAND Interface the neck band. Fold lengthwise, right sides together. Stitch, turn, and press. Attach to neckline evenly.
