Sand erosion in single phase and multiphase flow conditions is often observed in oil and gas transmission systems. Presence of sand in such systems is a concern which can bring serious problems and damage in valves, chokes, T-junctions, elbows, contractions, expansions and other pipe fitting. Some of the most vulnerable pipe fittings are those which change the flow direction such as elbows and T-junctions which can greatly increase the probability of sand particles impacting pipe walls at high velocities and sharp angles.
