English in a Minute: The Bottom Line
Welcome to English in a Minute! This piece of paper has lines at the top, middle and bottom. But what does “the bottom line” mean? AM: Andrew, did you watch the baseball game last night? AS: Yes, I did. And I saw us lose, again. We need some new players. AM: Well, they’re getting better. And they tried really hard! AS: Yeah, they try hard, but the bottom line is, you have to hit the ball to win. AM: They weren’t hitting. The bottom line means the most basic or important thing to consider in a situation. "Bottom line” can also be used to mean the final result or outcome. And that’s English in a Minute! --------- Learning English is Voice of America’s multimedia source of news and information for millions of English learners worldwide.
