In 2024, scientists published the most complete neural map ever created of an adult fruit fly brain. That tiny brain contains approximately 139,000 neurons and over 50 million synapses connected in an incredibly complex network. This is part of the FlyWire project – an effort to create the most detailed connectome map ever of an organism. By early 2026, the biotechnology company Eon Systems took this neural network, placed it in a virtual body inside a computer, and let it “live” in a 3D physical simulation environment. That is, essentially, they created the most accurate digital fly ever. And the scary thing is that the fly may not even know it's in a simulation. For it, the virtual body is real. The virtual world is real. The sensory signals it receives are also real.
